Donated eyes left untended for 22 days

This incident added an insult to injury for G.G. (Irwin) Hospital, just 11 days after the hospital got name in TV for a perfect wrong reason, branding and parading an HIV+ woman.

Strange things comes to picture as the mystery unfolds, Kutchhi Visha Oshwal Jain Mahajan in Bhuj regularly donates eyes to GG Hospital and many other in Saurashtra-Kutch for medical reasons, these eyes normally reach through domestic courier. This time the hospital staff did not came to collect the parcels.

A local courier operator who has been transporting these consignments regularly says that the consignment was sent on June 6. But, no one from the ophthalmology department of GG hospital came to take delivery of the parcels.

Later the delivery man delivered the nine parcels at 6 pm on Tuesday at the registration counter of the GG Hospital.

As expected, hospital Superintendent of GG hospital Dr BD Gupta puts blame on the organization that sends the eyes, saying that they did not communicate properly and the deliveryman who should have taken receipt.

HIV Positive Woman Labeled and Paraded

In what could be termed as one of the most disturbing moment for GG (Inwin) hospital, a HIV positive pregnant lady was labeled as HIV positive and paraded through the wards to warn other patients about her status.

Prafula Parmar, a nurse at the GG Hospital stuck a label that read 'HIV Serum positive' on her forehead. it is so disturbing as labels are pasted only on foreheads of dead bodies after post-mortem examination.

On Saturday, the victim met the gynaecology department head Dr Nalini Anand. After going through her reports, the doctor told her to stay away from other patients and told the nurses about her health condition. The woman had come to the gynaecology department for a check-up on Wednesday. Tests confirmed that she was HIV positive and doctors advised her to terminate the pregnancy, which was done.

The nurse, Prafula Parmar, pasted the label on her forehead and took her around the hospital campus on Saturday, it was mid-way through the parade that volunteers of 'Jamnagar District Network of People Living With HIV' noticed her and they took the matter with hospital supritendent.

Health minister Jay Narayan Vyas instituted an inquiry and asked two doctors and a nurse to proceed on leave till completion of the inquiry.

Barda Sanctury - Mining poses threat

There was a time when Gujarat State Govt wished to shift Asiatic Lions from Gir National Sanctuary to Barda wildlife sanctuary in Jamnagar.

Information sought by RTI reveals mining activities near Barda area.

21 permissions for mining around the forest area have been granted since 2002, many NOC are issued from Forest Dept as well. There are 38 additional requests that are pending for the licenses to mine in and around Barda sanctuary. Obviously, forest dept are denied the claim categorically. Out of many licenses few were also renewed on bases of NOC from forest Dept.

Barda sanctuary is spread over 190 sq km falling in Jamnagar and Porbandar districts. According to Wildlife Protection Act (1972), mining is not permissible in 5 km periphery of the sanctuary.

Water Crisis - worsening

After many years, Jamnagar Citizens will see a sight long forgotten - water tankers.

Delayed monsoon is draging reserviour levels to new lows and many people in the region will have to rely on water supplied through tankers if the monsoon gets delayed by a week or more. Of 109 / 120 reservoirs in Saurashtra-Kutch have hit rock bottom or are on the verge of it.

Cities like Jamnagar and Bhuj cities will need to look for alternative arrangements like supplying underground water to the residents through tanker services to tide over the situation.

The situation is worst in Jamnagar as only 6.31 per cent of the quantum is left in the 30 dams in Jamnagar. Over 55 villages in the district has already started water supply through tankers. This number is likely to go up, if rains don't come within a week or so.

Farming Food For Birds Only

In the past farmers across the world had to share their crops with jamin-dar's, then rajah's and after democracy its the Govt.

However in Gujarat, its been a tradition to share the crops with the one who gives us the crop - Almighty God.

Following the same tradition, people are feeding birds with generous quantities of bajra and jowar in Jamnagar district, farmers in villages of Jodia taluka are sowing bajra, jowar specially for birds.

Two lanes of jowar are being sowed and the crop is meant only to feed birds and is aptly called "Bhagwan no Bhag (God's share)" .

Many farmers in these areas have moved on to produce high yield crops or foreign fruits and vegetation, these farmers have now decided to sow few areas of their land only for birds.

VD Bala, a forester at Hingolgadh sanctuary and members of his Navrang Nature Club are travelling many villages since a year for the cause of
"Ram ki Chidia, Ram ka Khet" (Birds and fields both are due to grace of Lord Ram). Bala is expecting more then 10,000 farmers in Saurashtra will join this drive.

Sachana - Boom from Recession

Worldwide economic slow down has actually become a savior for Gujarat's Alang ship breaking industry. There is a new ship everyday ready to get broken, few years back there were only 4-5 ships a month.

Jamnagar's Sachana has something to cheer about as well. Alang ship breaking yard is over loaded due to incoming traffic, many small ships have preferred to go to Sachana ship breaking yard which is located in north Saurashtra, 28 km from Jamnagar.

Sachana yard is smaller than Alang. It has 15 plots. At Sachana yard, ship stands inside the sea, away from ship breaking plot. After breaking some parts inside the sea, ships are pulled towards the plots.

Sachana ship breaking yard had total six plots.

Jamnagar Election Coverage - 2009

Jamnagar, will be the prime place of battle between Congress & BJP in Saurashtra.

in 2004, the BJP'S five-time MP Chandresh Patel lost by very thin margin of around 5000 votes by an Ahir leader, Vikram Madam. BJP candidate of 2004, Chandresh Patel had supported Kisan Sangh to campaign against chief minister Narendra Modi, and he had to leave party for that, fearing one more loss, the CM wooed Patel was given BJP worker's card, but not the ticket to contest.

This was the first time BJP lost her seat in Jamnagar. Jamnagar seat is dominated mainly by Leva Patel and Ahir communities, BJP's trick of proposing Ramesh Mungra will make a split between Leva and Ahir communities. Adding fuel to fire, there is internal feud in the Congress and Madam might pay the price for it.

Vikram Madam is very popular in Jamnagar City due to his social work and accessibility to people, however the BJP's dominance of Jamnagar Municipal Corporation is a major roadblock for him. BJP also controls most of the Taluka panchayat like Salaya (Congress), Dwarka, Jam-Jodhpur, Dhrol, Bhanvad, Kalavad and Khambhaliya municipalities. The Jamnagar District panchayat is also dominated by the BJP.

Vikram Madam is also facing issues within the party. for e.g. Poonam Madam (his niece) was also lobbying to get the party ticket, on the other hand, this time BJP has picked up a new comer Ramesh Mungra, Ramesh was BJP general secretary and Jamnagar district panchayat member. Hailing from powerful Leva Patel community. Ex-Deputy CM Mulu Bera, who is also current Bhanvad MLA (Ahir community) will assist Ramesh to woo Ahir votebank.

Out of around 13 lakh voters in Jamnagar, Ahirs are in a majority with 16% votes. The other are Kshatriyas (14%), Patels (14%), a majority of them being Leuva Patels), Muslims (13%) and Vaniya/Jain 10%.

Jamnagar has many new issues in this election, new things like heavy industrialisation has also thrown up issues like environmental degradation. Non-availability of sufficient water for drinking, irrigation and industrial purposes is a major issue in the district. Unemployment, clashes with migratory population etc. are other emerging issues.
